Fox and Scarface's violent battle

As they are welcomed to the park by the Great Stag, the Farthing animals are greeted by some of the creatures of White Deer Park. Whistler finds a mate, Speedy, and Weasel attracts the attentions of a male weasel called Measly. But not everyone is pleased about the new arrivals. The blue fox, Scarface, feels threatened by the arrival of more foxes and is determined to cause trouble. Scarface and his mate, Lady Blue warn the Farthing animals off their land. Thanks to the Great Stag, a deal is struck, giving the Farthing animals their own land, but Scarface is still unhappy at having to give up some of his territory. Kestrel mistakenly kills Mrs Fieldmouse. As winter draws close, Adder and Toad go into hibernation.
A hard winter arrives, bringing heavy snow. The animals struggle to find food, and Fox and Vixen are warned off hunting on Scarface's land. Badger is injured when he takes a nasty fall and wakes up in the warden's cottage where he recovers. Worried about his friends, Badger persuades the warden's cat to take a message to them, but Kestrel attacks the cat when she thinks he is about to attack Mole. Badger finally recovers and tries to persuade the other animals to go and live in the warden's cottage. The other animals think Badger has gone mad, and he angrilly returns to warden's cottage alone, before being turned away. He comes to Kestrels rescue when the cat attacks her in revenge, then returns to his friends. Hungry Fox is accused of eating Mrs Vole, but Weasel saw Scarface eat her. Scarface attacks Weasel and forces her to spy on the Farthing animals. The animals organise scavenging raids on nearby farms. One night Fox and Vixen raid a farm, where two of Scarface's cubs are shot dead.
When the warden is taken ill to hospital, poachers invade the park, killing some of the deer herd. Fox comes up with a plan to get rid of the poachers, luring them onto the frozen pond, when the ice gives way. Mole finds a mate and dies happy towards the end of winter. As spring begins to arrive, the poachers return and shoot a blue fox in revenge for Fox's trick. Scarface is furious and blames Fox for the death of his son. When the warden returns, Fox lures the poachers to his cottage, where they are arrested. Fox and Vixen have four cubs - Bold, Dreamer, Friendly and Charmer. Scarface and Lady Blue also have cubs, one of whom is named Ranger. The rabbits and hares also have babies. When Mole's mate comes to break the news of Mole's death, Badger cannot accept it and believes that Mole's son, Mossy is his old friend.
When Adder and Toad wake up from their hibernation, Toad's homing instinct has him trying to get back to his old pond in Farthing Wood! Fortunately he meets a female toad called Paddock, and Toad is kept in White Deer Park by another instinct! Scarface and Lady Blue spy on the Farthing fox cubs, jealous that they are better than theirs. One day Fox finds the body of Dreamer, and is convinced that his daughter was killed by Scarface, though he has no proof. Fox clashes with his son Bold over what to do, and Bold ends up captured by the blue foxes when he goes to confront Scarface. Bold manages to escape, but not before Weasel and Measly have to get the Great Stag to prevent boodshed between the red and blue foxes. Fox is furious with Bold, and Bold leaves White Deer Park, vowing never to return.
Fox realises Scarface must be stopped, when he kills Mrs Hare, and the animals decide that Adder is the creature to do the job. However the plan goes terribly wrong when Weasel and Measly give the wrong message to Adder, and she kills Scarface's son, Bounder instead. Fox takes his anger out on Badger, calling him an 'old codger'. Adder is forced into hiding after Scarface catches up with her and during a tussle, bites the end off her tail. Fox's daughter Charmer falls in love with Scarface's son Ranger, but their secret meetings are soon discovered by Charmer's brother, Friendly, who is quick to inform his parents of the relationship. Fox refuses to give the young foxes his blessing, but realises that he cannot stop them seeing each other. Badger dies of old age, believing that he is still in his old home in Farthing Wood. The other animals mourn, especially Fox, who regrets being so unkind to Badger before he died.
Outside the park, Bold had enjoyed his new freedom, making friends with a crow and Shadow the badger. However, after badly cutting his eye rescuing Shadow from a hunter's trrap, Bold walks into the middle of a pheasant shoot and is shot in the thigh. Bold survives but is badly injured and unable to hunt. Leaving Shadow behind, Crow leads Bold to a nearby town where they can scavange from humans. In the town, Bold meets a young vixen called Whisper, who takes him hunting for rats. Whisper agrees to be Bold's mate when she discovers who his father is. Bold, Whisper and Crow make friends with a lonely St.Bernard dog called Rollo. When Whisper falls pregnant with Bold's cubs, she annonces that she wants them to be born in White Deer Park. Despite his vow never to return, Bold agrees for the sake of his cubs. With Crow following, the two foxes begin their journey, but the long days of travelling have a devastating effect on Bold's health.
Back in White Deer Park, the feud between the fox families comes to a head when Lady Blue and Vixen fight. Scarface is lead to believe that Vixen made an unprovoked attack on his mate, and plans an attack on Farthing land to kill all the Farthing animals 'one by one'. Ranger warns Friendly about the attack, and the animals all gather at Fox's earth where Fox vows to protect them. When Scarface and his tribe turn up, Fox challenges Scarface to single combat, to the death. The fight is violent and bloody. Fox eventually appears to be winning and bites into Scarface's throat, but when the warden appears, Fox lets him go. Meanwhile, Adder comes out of hiding, determined to get her revenge...
Bold, Whisper and Crow arrive at the boundry of White Deer Park, but when Whisper goes to look for food, Bold hides from her, unable to face going back into the park. After killing Mrs Rabbit, Scarface crosses the stream where Adder bites his leg, killing him. As news of Scarface's death spreads, the animals gather at the stone circle for a celebration. When Kestrel spots Whisper arrives at Fox and Vixen's earth and tells them about Bold. Fox and Vixen go alone to the boundry to find their son. Lady Blue and Ranger discover Scarface's body, but Charmer begs Ranger to forgive Adder. Crow leads Fox and Vixen to Bold, where Fox is reconciled with his son, just before Bold passes away. Charmer and Ranger bring the news of Scarface's death to Fox. Fox gives Ranger his blessing to mate with Charmer, finally bringing the feud to an end.
